Darryle Tailford of Orange was charged with the murder of Ricky Eggins, who was alleged to have been killed at a house in Romano Drive in the early hours of March 2, 2019.
Tailford appeared in Orange Local Court via audio visual link from jail, where he is being held on remand, on Monday.
Solicitor Peter Ringbauer, who also appeared via video link due to coronavirus restrictions.
Mr Ringbauer entered the not guilty plea for murder and the guilty plea for manslaughter on Tailford's behalf.
However, a representative from the Department of Public Prosecutions refused to accept the guilty plea for the manslaughter charge.
The prosecutor said because manslaughter was an alternative charge the not guilty plea for the murder charge will have to go to trial.
Magistrate David Day committed Tailford to appear in the NSW Supreme Court in Sydney for arraignment on June 19.
Tailford was 26 years old at the time of his arrest on March 2, 2019.
He did not apply for bail in Orange Local Court on Monday and bail was formally refused.
