A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said the man's arm was caught in a piece of machinery and injured as a result.
At about 11am on Sunday morning, police and ambulance attended the scene and the man was taken by road to a helicopter and then the man was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital by Toll Ambulance Rescue 207.
A spokesperson for Toll said the call was to provide "immediate and critical care for a male patient".
In a statement, Yancoal confirmed the incident and said the "relevant Government authorities were informed and Yancoal is currently assisting with investigations".
A Glencore spokesperson confirmed they received a request on Saturday to allow a helicopter to land at the Ulan Mine complex to facilitate transport of an injured worker.
They were subsequently advised, however, that the site had been contacted by mistake.
Police confirmed that the incident is being investigated by Workcover.
