Councillor Tony Mileto used Tuesday night's Orange City Council meeting to ask for numbers to be painted on gutters after speaking to police and paramedics.
"They've raised concerns with regards to the lack of numbering on gutters relating to buildings and what's occurring in some cases, they're having trouble identifying the houses," he said.
Cr Mileto asked for money to be set aside or to create a partnership with Wangarang Industries to have more numbers painted.
Mayor Reg Kidd recalled the issue had last been dealt with more than a decade ago, while councillor Russell Turner indicated blue numbers could be used in villages without guttering. "It works very well," he said.
After the meeting, he said he could remember having to find an address quickly during his policing days.
"Not everyone can wave outside their house - if there's been a major crime committed in their house or someone's had a heart attack, often the second person is trying to accommodate the person who's had the episode," he said.
Central West Police District acting Inspector Susan Mackenzie welcomed the idea.
"A lot of houses don't have house numbers or they're obscured or you can't find them because they're so little," she said. "It would save seconds, not minutes, but everything that makes things easier is going to be a positive thing."
