The 16-year-old was accepted into the Rock School for Dance Education where he was going to spend all of 2020 training six hours a day when COVID-19 struck.
He was recently reunited with his family after two weeks of isolation in Sydney.
His mother, Madeline, said when they dropped Flynn off in February, there were not many cases.
But when the school closed, they brought him home.
"They were going to close the borders until mid-June and when they decided that, that was it," Mrs Fisher said.
Flynn said his flight home was almost empty, with each passenger allocated a row to themselves, and although he was not tested for COVID-19, he had to give his address.
"The airport was pretty busy," he said.
He stayed with the family of his friend, who he had also attended the Rock School class with, rather than return to his family straightaway.
"There's five of us in the house so it was easier - it wasn't great, but we were still able to work," Mrs Fisher said.
"If it had've been two weeks later, he would've had to stay at a hotel so at least we had control over where to put him."
It meant Flynn had company during the two weeks of isolation, although he still described it as very boring.
"I watched a lot of movies," he said.
"But I'm glad I got home when I did."
Flynn hopes to return to Philadelphia in September and will take dance courses online until then.
