Fire and Rescue NSW station officer Dane Philippe said a fire crew closed one direction of the road between Kite and Moulder streets while they waited for the gas company to close off a gas leak.
"The call came through to us as a smell of gas and we used our gas detection equipment to narrow it down," Mr Philippe said.
"It was gas from under the footpath."
He said the crew was called to the gas leak about 10.20am and set up precautionary fire equipment and closed one direction of traffic as a precautionary measure until 12.30pm.
He said the gas company clamped off the leak and would fix the problem.
"We stood by to provide fire protection," Mr Philippe said.
"It's fairly common, any release of natural gas we will be notified of and we will go and provide fire protection.
"Sometimes they are cased by people digging, and not dialing before they dig, but certainly not in this case."
