FoodCare volunteer co-ordinator Anne Hopwood said customers would no longer be able to walk through the store and select items off the shelves.
Instead customers are encouraged to bring their own pen and shopping bags and fill out an order form outside the centre.
A volunteer will then go to get the food off the shelves and hand it in a basket for the customer to pack their own bags.
FoodCare has also cut its hours to Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 10.30 and 1pm. A Thursday afternoon session has been removed.
Fresh food and bread stands are now outside the centre.
Ms Hopwood said Foodcare had now obtained a steady supply for fresh fruit and vegetables which are free to customers.
It followed a plea for help from FoodCare supporters last week that coronavirus-induced hoarding by shoppers was limiting supermarkets from having stock to give to FoodCare.
"We've had a good response from members of the community wanting to help us," she said.
That included a large gift from the Orange Ex-Services' Club plus support from supermarkets and some home gardeners.
Ms Hopwood said some older volunteers had stopped assisting due to coronavirus concerns but some younger people had stepped in to take on the roles.
She said FoodCare prices were considerably cheaper than supermarkets.
