With 30.2 millimetres recorded at the Orange airport weather station on Monday it is expected about 130 millimetres will have fallen in the month.
That compares to the March mean rainfall of 66 millimetres.
Just 54.8 millimetres fell in March last year.
While April is traditionally Orange's driest month, the mean rainfall is only 39.2 millimetres, a bucketing of up to 50 millimetres is forecast for later this week which would further boost water supplies and invigorate gardens.
NSW Farmers Orange branch chair Bruce Reynolds said Orange was now in a 'green drought' situation with most areas receiving reasonable rains.
However, he said the area north of Orange from Mullion Creek to Stuart Town had missed out on a lot of the rainfall.
"From a grass point of view going into winter we're in a good situation," he said.
However, he said many farmers had cash shortages and would not benefit until crops were sold next February-March.
Mr Reynolds said water supplies varied with many farm dams still well down.
RAIN FORECAST FOR APRIL
He said farmers would be hoping for good rainfall later this week, there were no frosts and there were warmer than average temperatures for crop growth.
Mr Reynolds said apple producers had been hit by the drought. "What apples that do come out, they won't look as pretty, but they are still good to eat," he said.
