As of Friday, anyone interested in adopting a pet from the RSPCA must make an appointment before visiting the shelter and they should fill out an appointment request form from the website.
There are currently eight animals at the shelter, six cats, Oliver Bert, Ernie, Noah, Ezra, and Oakley as well as two dogs, Savanah and Rusty. Petbarn also has a cat named Elena.
RSPCA NSW CEO Steve Coleman said the changes were implemented to protect the health and safety of staff and the community and keep the number of people at the shelters at any one time to a minimum.
"We will need your help as throughout this, RSPCA NSW will remain committed to the care, treatment and welfare of all in-care and incoming animals," Mr Coleman said.
He said the changes to the usual adoption process were temporary and the RSPCA was operating with a reduced number of staff.
Mr Coleman said the RSPCA NSW also relies heavily on its foster care network to provide temporary homes to animals who need a helping hand and there would still be assistance for incoming animals in need.
