The Canobolas Rural Technology High School's Clontarf Foundation is co-ordinating the effort to find school community families needing food.

It will deliver the food to their doorsteps on Monday.

Clontarf Academy staff member Tom Goolagong said packs of frozen food had been donated, while others had been supplied at cost, to the school by Barrett's Wholesale Foods.

He said it followed a similar community help project at Christmas when they organised the distribution of 800 kilograms of ham and other foods to families.

Mr Goolagong said he had been approached by Barrett's offering to help out the community in a time of need.

The food provided includes frozen lasagnes, chicken Kiev, breads and chicken nuggets.

Mr Goolagong said in the first day 53 families, representing a total of 272 people, had indicated they were keen to receive some of the food.

He said the coronavirus had hit many families hard with job and income losses.

"Everyone has been affected from the top to the absolute bottom," he said.

"It could be community-wide."

As some of the food is coming at cost price Mr Goolagong said they needed help to pay for it.

He said any Orange businesses who wanted to help out in providing funds could contact him on 0423 313 317.

To be involved school families need to call the school by 3pm on Friday.
