A big crowd turned up for a last round at the course, and a last beer at the clubhouse, with the venue closing from Monday.

The Orange Ex-Services' Club says it has taken a big financial hit due to the coronavirus and has brought forward the venue's closure from June 30 to rationalise its expenditure.

Brett McClure said his regular group of four to six players had grown to 11 for the final round.

"It's terrible. It's a very sad day," he said.

"Bloomfield has been really good for the hacker. I'd rather walk around Bloomfield than Wentworth or Duntryleague."

Mr McClure said he would move to play at Wenworth Golf Club, which has amalgamated with the Ex-Services' Club. "When I first moved here I couldn't believe a town like Orange had three golf courses," he said.

Newsagent Stephen Parker said he enjoyed a final round with a few mates and a beer.

"It's very sad. We're having a bit of a novelty game," he said.

"I don't think the reality has sunk in yet. I've been playing [here] on and off for 20 years."

Mr Parker said players had been working toward the June 30 date and was surprised by the club's decision last week to close the course now. "It was disappointing, it could have been handled better," he said.

Mr Parker said he accepted it would be better for Orange golf having just two courses.

"Long term it will be good for golf in Orange," he said.

Sam Livingstone said he had been playing at the Country Club for many years.

"It's pretty sad really. I grew up playing this course," he said.

"The course is jam-packed today. There would be 100 people here."

Mr Livingstone, who said he was on the board at the Wentworth club, said he understood the reasons behind the Ex-Services' Club's move.

"It was going to happen regardless [of the coronavirus outbreak]," he said.Mr Livingstone said combining the assets, including the groundkeepers of the Ex-Services' and Wentworth clubs would lead to a better course and facilities at Wentworth.

The Country Club site is to be the home of Orange's $25 million sporting complex.
