Central West Police District Detective Inspector Bruce Grassick said the man was assaulted about 5.45am at a home in Rossi Drive and sustained wounds to his back and torso as well as his hand.
Detective Inspector Grassick said a yellow Holden Commodore was allegedly stolen from the address and was involved in a short pursuit with police about 7.06am.
He said at about the same time, a Hyundai i30 was found burnt on the Escort Way about 20 kilometres west of Orange.
"That had been stolen previously," Detective Inspector Grassick said.
"We are still determining if the two [incidents] are linked."
The Holden was still missing on Wednesday afternoon and police were seeking information about three males who were wearing dark clothing and had their faces covered.
