The idea was sparked at the end of 2019 by club president Guy Pascoe, who felt the need to acknowledge the areas a majority of players reside in outside of Mudgee.
"Last year I approached some of the senior members in the open's team and discussed a possible name change with them incorporating the district rather than just Mudgee," he said.
"I thought it was more appropriate that we incorporate those areas as well."
While Pascoe, who will continue to coach open's this year, admits the alteration could have been made at an earlier date, the response so far has been encouraging with little opposing thoughts put forward.
"It's something we probably could have done at the start of last year but because we had to get the ball up and running so quickly we just ran with the Mudgee Dragons," Pascoe said.
"But when it was discussed with the girls from the other areas, Kandos and Gulgong and surrounds, they were rapt.
It's been really positive, there hasn't been any negative feedback from it, everyone's really getting behind it because we are an incorporated group from the district.

"They're even talking about trying to get on the recruitment drive and get more girls from those areas involved."
It was a tossup between the Midwest Dragons and Cudgegong Crocodiles, but Pascoe says there was 'no particular reason' for why the wild horse was chosen.
"We had a vote with the girls and that's the one we came up with," he said.
Team colours and logo have not been finalised but are likely to be revealed at an unveiling that will take place before the start of the 2020 season.
"We've got a basic idea of what it will be," Pascoe said.
The change was made official on January 29, 2020.
