But the message from Orange's Australia Day ambassador, David Hall OAM, will perhaps lead to a swing the other way - a swing towards unity.
Hall is a champion wheelchair tennis player and has been an Australia Day ambassador for nearly a decade, since he retired from competitive sport.
He says Australia's multi-cultural communities will always have differing opinions, but it's important to use our national day to "reflect on the past, think about the future, be thankful we do live in this country".
"If our community spirit is strong then as a nation it can only be beneficial."

Be proud to be Australian.
