Preecha Duangjan, 39, of Dalton Street, was driving along Bathurst Road just after 6pm on December 1 when he was stopped by police.
After failing a breath test, he was taken to Orange Police Station where he returned a mid-range drink-driving reading of 0.093.
On Monday he was given a six-month community correction order, three-month driving disqualification and 12-month interlock order.
Duangjan told police he had three cans of full-strength beer between 1pm and 3.30pm.
Through his interpreter in court on Monday he said he was "sorry for what happened".
"I thought I was not drunk because I was not drinking at night time, I thought I did not have any alcohol in me," he said.
Magistrate David Day convicted Duangjan because he had a prior low-range drink-driving offence from 2013.
Mr Day also noted Duangjan's family obligations, particularly to his parents.
