More than 3000 homes and businesses lost electricity in the centre, north and west of Orange, with several homes still without power on Monday morning.

Around 1500 homes north of the CBD were without power from 11.15-11.45pm, the result of lightening strikes in the region.

Power crews also cut off electricity to almost 1400 homes in west Orange from approximately 8.30pm, as a precautionary measure following the lightening.

Essential Energy Community Relations Manager David Crough said power had been restored to the majority of homes throughout the night, although a number of other outages had been reported on Monday morning.

"Crews are working as quickly as safety allows to restore power to those customers," he said.

While the CBD was not affected by the outages, the Orange Aquatic Centre was closed for several hours on Monday morning as a result of the thunder storm.

A large amount of rain water from the storm triggered a safety trip-switch in the equipment that normally pumps chlorine into the pools.

Orange City Council spokesperson Allan Reeder said due to low levels of chlorine in the pools, they were initially closed for swimming on Monday morning but were able to be re-opened by 7.30 am.

Staff posted a message on the pool's Facebook page to alert early morning swimmers of the closure from the storm, which bought more needed rain to the region.

More than 18 millimetres fell between 8.30pm and 1.10am, according to recordings taken at the Orange airport.

A severe weather warning has been issued for Orange on Monday, with a high-possibility of thunderstorms and damaging winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson Abrar Shabren said a dust storm which moved through Parkes and Dubbo on Sunday evening could also affect Orange on Monday.

Mr Shabren said Monday's storm was expected to bring quick, short bursts of rain, with the possibility of golf-ball sized hailstones in parts of the south-western slopes and Central Tablelands.
