Orange City Library has just compiled its list of the most-borrowed books for the past 12 months.

Central West Libraries reading and writing co-ordinator Jasmine Vidler said Australian authors Fleur McDonald's Where the River Runs and Fiona McCallum's Making Peace were among the top reads.

Ms Vidler said the other best-loaners were in international crime and suspense fiction with Ian Rankin's In a House of Lies and David Baldacci's Long Road to Mercy.

She said borrowers and some librarians who read Where the River Runs had described it as "riveting Australian rural suspense crossed with family drama" and "she is described as the voice of the outback."

The Making Peace book received comments ranging from "lovely and uplifting" to "heartwarming" and "thoroughly enjoyable," she said.

Ms Vidler said books by James Patterson, Michael Robotham, Lee Child and Ann Cleves, whose mysteries have been produced for television, had also rated well among borrowers.

She said despite the world being in the online streaming age readers still loved reading books and borrowing magazines, DVDs and talking books.

"In 2019 Orange City Library registered 1591 new members," she said.

"Despite the availability of a number of streaming services, including CWL members' subscription to Kanopy [a streaming service], DVDs continue to be popular with more than 21,000 loans in 2019," she said.

The top titles for adults included The Shape of Water plus movie adaptions of the Tim Winton books Cloudstreet and Breath.

Ms Vidler said the most popular DVDs for children were various Lego movies, Hotel Transylvania 3 and Lady and the Tramp.

"Talking books for all ages are an alternate way to enjoy a story and making long car journeys easier for all," she said.

"Two-thirds of the 7748 talking book loans were on CDs with one-third in the Playaway format."

Ms Vidler said increasing numbers of library members were signing up to use downloadable talking books.

The most borrowed magazines of 2019 were Australian Country Style and Earth Garden.
