Hoardings are up around the buildings next to the main grandstand ahead of the construction project that will continue throughout 2020.
Bathurst-based Hines Construction, the same company that built the Anzac Park indoor sports centre, has been awarded the tender for the $2.8 million construction part of the project.
Orange mayor Cr Reg Kidd said it was great to see the work start.
Cr Kidd said it would be an asset for cricket players in Orange, across western NSW and even players from Sydney seeking an indoor training venue.
"Orange has a terrifically proud cricketing history," he said.
"There will be canteen facilities, ladies' and men's restrooms and the indoor facility which can operate 24/7 where you can have batting practice, bowling practice, fielding practice and have other uses. I reckon within 12 months they will be here and operating."
He said Cricket NSW would have development officers at the centre and it would also be available for other uses.
Council sport and recreation committee chair Cr Jason Hamling said rugby league would continue to be played at the ground during the construction period.
"We've been in touch with local sporting groups and they know the timetable. They'll be working as best they can to minimise any impacts," he said.
Cr Hamling said the clubs were looking at marquee tents and caravan kiosks to replace the buildings that housed a bar and an upstairs viewing area for sponsors.
