Canobolas Zone Rural Fire Service fire mitigation officer Geoff Selwood said the smoldering started due to heat causing combustion in 800 tonnes of mulch.
He said when there was 800 tonnes of mulch in a pile the hot conditions and chemical reactions could cause it to smolder and ignite.
"They've got a bulldozer and an excavator to spread it out and our job is to cool it down while they are doing it," Mr Selwood said.
"It's going to be a lot of water to cool it."
Due to the severe fire danger on Saturday, Mr Selwood said stations through out the Canobolas Zone were manned with between eight and 12 firefighters ready to go at each station in case of an emergancy.
He said six rural fire trucks and a group vehicle also went to Mudgee to help with the fire there on Saturday morning.
"That's just the ones who go up daily, we've got another team up there on a five day stint" he said.
He said teams who travel to fire zones for five day stints spend one day of travel, three days on duty and another day of travel.
However, for the daily support he said each day there was a different crew.
"If it doesn't turn out as bad as everyone is predicting it will be, it will become every second day," Mr Selwood said.
"We've been doing it now, it would have to be three weeks every day.
"The volunteers have really stepped up."
