SHOPPERS were out and about for the Boxing Day sales, but businesses generally agreed pre-Christmas levels were higher this year.

Most chain stores opened for limited hours on the public holiday, with independent boutiques tending to remain closed.
Big W manager Rodney Cole said the technology sections seemed to attract the most customers.
"It's been very busy and consistent during the day," he said.
However, he said Christmas Eve was the busiest for the store.
"It was much bigger than previous years as well," he said.
Homewares store Adairs was also busier prior to Christmas, with most customers coming through on Monday.
Manager Elisa Gregory said a lot of gift cards were coming through.
"Fragrance has been a big thing and the accessory line is big as well," she said.
Most stores will return to regular trade on Friday until the New Year's Day public holiday on Wednesday.
The Australian Retail Association said Boxing Day spending across the country could mount to a whopping $2.6 billion, with $871 million in NSW alone, but studies by the ARA, Commonwealth Bank, ANZ and Roy Morgan suggested retail might struggle amid a softening consumer market.
