Retailers in Orange City Centre had a busy day despite the 39-degree heat, but many said last week was busier as people cleared their Christmas lists.
Rockwear manager Justine Kearns said she expected Boxing Day to be busier - most businesses in the centre will open from 10am-3pm on Thursday.
"A lot of people did their Christmas shopping in November when we opened and the air quality hasn't helped unfortunately, a lot of people are staying at home," she said.
Managers at Laurie Claire Boutique and Dusk said the stream of people had been constant since the centre opened its Summer Street access last month.
Laurie Clare owner Tayla Wasson said Christmas Day outfits had been in demand.
"They're buying for events," she said.
Meanwhile, Dusk manager Kasey Edwards said candles were adaptable presents.
"Everyone likes a home fragrance," she said.
With underwear and socks still a popular stocking filler, Bonds manager Amanda Chapman said many were also looking for those presents.
"It was probably busier last week, people are just tired now, I think the heat has gotten to them," she said.
Councillor Tony Mileto, who also chairs Orange City Council's economic development committee, said he understood from retailers shoppers had been more organised this year and many people who did not shop online for a specific gift tended to favour gift cards.
"[People want to] take advantage of the post-Christmas sales," he said.
