The Orange High School student attended an awards ceremony in Sydney on Monday.
In just 11 days, the 18-year-old will fly to Germany where she will work as an au pair for a year.
Miss Smith's friend enrolled in German through the Dubbo School of Distance Education and she decided to do the same.
"If I could pick anywhere in the world to live - I was just fascinated with Austria and Germany," she said.
She studied for her written HSC exam and a Skype conversation with an examiner in German with the help of textbooks, a thumb drive of assignments and phone and email contact with her teacher.
"I knew I was progressing quickly, I just really enjoyed the course," she said.
"I hoped for a band six, but when I got the call a week ago, it was definitely a surprise."
Students across the state will receive their HSC marks on Tuesday morning.
