Police and paramedics were called to the scene in Bathurst around midnight after the victim called for help on Triple-0 from his own phone after the incident.
A spokesperson for police said the man had been drinking at the Oxford Hotel and had left the premises when he was approached by the alleged assailant.
He was treated at the scene before being transported to Bathurst Base Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was released from hospital later on Sunday morning.
The man has since spoken to police and given a statement to detectives who are investigating the matter.
Police would not release details about what happened in the lead up to the incident, saying only it was "subject to an ongoing investigation by detectives".
Police are now looking to speak with any witnesses who may have seen the incident or saw what happened in the lead up to it.
They are asked to contact police on 6332 8699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The incident has come just days after the region's latest crime statistics were released with police welcoming a fall in a number of major crime categories.
