Gardening expert and Orange mayor Reg Kidd said adopting water wise methods inside your house can cut your water useage by up to 450 litres a day.

Cr Kidd said shorter showers were big water savers.

Under Level 5 water restrictions a shower time of just three minutes is recommended. "Taking a shorter shower can save power and water," he said.

"A long shower can use up to 250 litres of water. Install a water saving shower head which cuts down the flow."

You can obtain the shower head and a timer that lets you know when your three minutes are up from the council offices.

To gain a new shower head residents need to bring in their existing shower head and swap it for a water-saving device.

Council also offers free water audits of your house and if you have a bore, they can also check it and give it council authorisation.

Placing a bucket in the shower is also a good idea to catch the first stream of colder water before it warms up enough for you to shower.

Reuse this water by placing it on your garden.

Cr Kidd said you should check for dripping and leaking taps which can waste up to 200 litres a day and cut the times you turn on taps.

"Water on the run can be a waste," he said.

"Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Put the plug in when shaving."

Put the plug in the kitchen sink when washing or rinsing your vegetables instead of using flowing tap water which will just go down the drain.

You can also put a bowl in the sink to catch water and re-use it on your garden.

Wait for a full load before using your washing machine and your dishwasher.

"Washing machines use on average up to 105 litres of water and dishwashers use 35 litres for every wash," he said.

By only using the machines when the load is full you will cut down on water and power use which also saves you money.
