Working with old and new technologies, ambrotypes and digital film, Moseley unites two distinctly different periods of media to reframe and express the sublime.

Tapping into the powerful emotion inspired by the experience of nature, A Lake, a Forest and the Dark Voice of the Sea is a self-reflective investigation into the human condition.

In February this year Moseley embarked on a 10-day voyage aboard the historic brigantine Soren Larsen sailing from Hobart to Sydney where he worked as artist and ship hand, drawing on his maritime experience as a shipwright, charter boat skipper and engineer.

This close understanding of his subject anchors Moseley's examination of the metaphor of man and the sea across a series of ambrotypes and a large scale three-channel video work.

While metaphorical in its existential exploration of man and the sea, the exhibition resonates with a parallel contemporary experience that is faced with the reckoning of a new might of nature.

Triggered by the grand scale of climate change, artists are responding to society's potential powerlessness to stop the force of change in nature.

In the case of Moseley's work, his play with perspective, space and time speaks to this emotional powerlessness and irrationality in the face of nature's force, communicating a timeless experience of self reflection when immersed, in awe of nature.

Bill Moseley: A Lake, a Forest and the Dark Voice of the Sea runs from 10am December 7 until February 9.

This is a free, family-friendly opening where adults can enjoy a glass of wine in the gallery while children (K-6) get creative with art-making activities, animated films and snacks from 5.30-7.30pm.
