Fire and Rescue NSW Orange crews received the triple-0 call at 8.20pm on Wednesday with reports of a small grass fire.

The fire was burning in an area off McLachlan Street, directly opposite Petrie's Mitre 10.

"It was definitely deliberately lit," Station Officer Brad Monico said.

The fire was small, approximately three metres by three metres, and in recently mowed grass.

Station Officer Monico said, however, that in hot, dry conditions grass fires can spread easily and quickly become dangerous.

Meanwhile, Orange residents were recently urged to be the eyes and ears for police following a spate of deliberately lit fires across NSW during the past few months.

Currently, firefighters are in attendance at 173 blazes across the state with widespread air quality alerts in place due to smoky conditions.

Since August this year, legal action - which ranges from cautions through to criminal charges - has been taken against 54 people for 69 bushfire-related offences.
