Ms Holmes was the day's ambassador and visited Ronald McDonald House at Westmead where the Orange family is staying.
The Cantrills' youngest child, Judd, is currently undergoing treatment for has a rare condition called trachebronchomalacia, or TBM, which has caused a collapsed airway, a hole in his heart and malrotation of his stomach and intestines.
Alana Cantrill described her as "kind and absolutely lovely" and she and husband Josh had been able to share the difference it had made for the family to stay at the house together.
"Judd would be a lot more unhappy if Harper and Hannah weren't here," she said.
Mrs Cantrill said the children spent time with Ms Holmes, playing with Lego and play dough and doing artwork, but were oblivious to her fame.
"We explained to Hannah about Dawson's Creek and how big it was when we were growing up and I think she understood she was a big deal," she said.
"There were 20 cameras flashing and I think the kids, especially Hannah and Harper, were loving all the attention."
With more tests on Judd to come, she hoped the family would be home for Christmas.
