Matthew Te Ika Maupoho Poihakena, 41, of Toogong Street, had been staying with the man in Wagga Wagga, and assaulted him after being asked to help move a small fridge.
He told police he felt he had been taken advantage of, did all the house work, was treated like the victim's "b****", and on the night of the assault he lost his temper picked up the victim and threw him on a bed.
When the victim went to call police, Poihakena took the man's mobile phone and left the house.
Poihakena represented himself in court and pleaded guilty to common assault, larceny and failing to appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court on October 23.
Magistrate David Day said Poihakena should be convicted but also noted that he was a "hard working man".
Mr Day gave Poihakena two 18-month community correction orders, similar to good behaviour bonds, for common assault and larceny, and he convicted him for failing to appear in court.
