Phar Laps came away with a 7-4 win after scores were locked at 3-all at the main break.
Rob Thorburn was able to bag a double in the third period to give Phar Laps a one-goal lead after Matt Pierce added a single to Squids' tally.
The Phar Laps' defend in the final period proved the difference as they were able to hold Squids out while adding another two to their tally for the win.
There was another tight scoreline in the seniors with Flounders edging out KWS 3 6-5.
The others senior matches were decisive with KWS1 toppling newcomers Water Rats 12-nil, Cobras downing a gallant Goal Diggers 7-3 and Jets accounting for KWS2 9-nil.
KWS Orcas flexed their muscles in the intermediate competition with a 10-5 win over KWS Barracudas.
KWS Hammerheads were made to work for their 7-5 win over KWS Dinocrocs and Rebels were too good for KWS Sharknados with a 5-1 victory.
Orange's youngest players are showing great improvement in the under-13 competition with Orange Water Dragons downing KWS Years 7s 8-3.
