While no fires are currently burning in the region, a vast amount of smoke has hung over and around Orange in the past few days.
Rural Fire Service Canobolas Zone captain Geoff Selwood said smoke had been blown down from blazes near Glen Innes and Narrabri.
The fire which had burning in the Goonoo State Forest has been extinguished.
"Anyone with asthma is encouraged to keep their medication with them and stay indoors if possible," he said.
"Having blown as far as it has the smoke won't be as thick or as dangerous but it depends on the person.
"People should follow advice from their doctor."
He also said children with respiratory problems should be kept indoors if possible.
He said the RFS was bracing for a storm front on Friday night which was predicted to bring lightning to much of Western NSW.
While Mr Selwood said the storm front was likely to do the most damage from Wilcannia and White Cliffs down to Albury, lightning was still a chance to hit west of Orange.
He also encouraged people to download the Fires Near Me app to keep an eye on nearby fires and to tell where smoke may be coming from.
