"I've always had a fascination with horror props and horror," he said, standing in his front yard which is nothing short of a monument to Halloween.
"I've always wanted to do Halloween and go trick-or-treating but Orange never really got around to it," he said.
Now, it has.
One hundred people visited his house near the corner of Nile Street and Byng Street last year, and he's noticed houses across the city bring more and more decorations to the fore.
"I'm glad it's embraced it a bit more, but that means there's more competition," he said.
"I've got to keep beefing it up, someone's apparently doing mechanatronics but I'm more old school and prefer it standing still."
"Each year I've got bigger and better than I've done before ... but I'm planning something already to make this even bigger," he said.
While he'll keep watch over his garden for most of the night, and despite saying he's too old to trick-or-treat himself, he'll also take an hour or two to wander around Orange with his girlfriend and her daughter to win some lollies himself.
With Mr Rout's sister and mother taking over duties at Nile Street, he'll have the chance use his beloved werewolf costume to take the spook to the streets.
