The Leukaemia Foundation's Light the Night will return, with crowds asked to carry a lantern as they walk side-by-side while the sun sets.
Participants will carry one of three colours; gold to remember someone, white for their own journey, or blue to show they care.
Event host, Olivia West made the call early on Friday morning the event would be moved to the Southcourt.
"There will be cover if showers come through but rain is not expected to prevent the walk which will still be beautiful around the civic precinct," she said.
Mrs West said they had a lovely family night planned with music and market food provided by the Rapid Relief team and other stall holders, jumping castles, face and nail painting and more.
She said all planned activities would go ahead under cover at Southcourt and the walk would go ahead.
"Some people find the walk really helpful, it's part of their healing process," Mrs West said.
More than 35,000 people will gather to walk at Light the Night events across the country on Friday.
Participants who register online will be guaranteed a coloured lantern to carry as darkness falls.
