Senator Canavan spent several hours examining areas of the mine.
They included the ore processing area, the tailings facilities and the mining innovation centre where Cadia's technology is displayed.
"It was his first visit, he's never been to Cadia before," a spokesman for Cadia Valley Operations said.

The visit comes just days after Newcrest Mining's annual report was released.
Managing director Sandeep Biswas said Cadia was achieving its goals.
"Cadia had an outstanding year, producing 913koz of gold and a record low All-In-Sustaining-Cost of $132 per ounce," he said.
Meanwhile, Fortescue Mining has yet to confirm whether it would continue gold and copper exploration at Nashdale.
Company officials told two residents' meetings in July it would make a decision later this year.
The public meetings were held in Orange and Canowindra.
