The cast of Jesus Christ Superstar began dress rehearsals on Monday with many of the costumes boasting a history of their own, made by Rosemary Worboys for the original OTC production 21 years ago.

Director Bruce Buchanan said the show would be staged around a gigantic illuminated cross and the cast had been opened to children as the next generation of performers.

"In today's society there's bullying and harassment - we don't stone or crucify people these days, but we certainly pursue them on Facebook," he said.

"It's a story of do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Nick Schmich, who will play Jesus, said he was used to more light-hearted characters like animals and cross-dressers.

"It's the first time I've played a real person," he said.

Jesus Christ Superstar, which chronicles his betrayal and crucifixion to the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, will be staged at Orange Civic Theatre from October 24-27.

Tickets are available for $52.50 for adults, $47 for pensioners and $30 for juniors from the Ticketek website or the box office.
