The discount grocery shop shifted its operations from the Glenroi Community Centre to a new base at 142 March Street.

More than 200 people stopped in, including around 60 families.

Managerial committee secretary Alex Ruse said the store was only closed for one shopping day to facilitate the move.

She said representatives from St Vincent de Paul's in Dubbo were among those at the open day, enquiring about the service the shop provides.

FoodCare sells food at a substantially discounted rate to people in need.

Some food is collected from the major supermarkets, local orchardists and even donated by home gardeners who had surplus produce.

It also buys food from Foodbank Australia which has a large warehouse in Sydney.

Service providers such as Life Without Barriers, Anglicare and the Benevolent Society purchase vouchers from the store to provide to clients.

Ms Ruse said a recent volunteer drive to account for the extended opening hours had filled all of the bus driving, store operating and supermarket collecting roles available.

She said they now had a team of 60 helping out.

"In fact we're turning people away," she said.

Ms Ruse said they were always on the lookout for residents with a surplus of fruit or vegetable which they would like to donate.

FoodCare president Anne Hopwood previously told the Central Western Daily the move from Glenroi was to make FoodCare more accessible to people in Orange.

Foodcare's new opening hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 10.30am-1pm and Thursday from 4.30-6pm.
