The woman, who is not named to protect the victim, turned her head away from the television screen in the court room when an image of her mother's facial injuries, including a swollen eye and bleeding cuts, was shown.
According to police the two women were drinking vodka and orange at a friend's house from 12.30pm and got into an argument.
The argument continued throughout the afternoon and escalated into a physical altercation about 7pm.
Police said the mother grabbed her daughter by her hair and the daughter punched her mother several times to her left eye and an ambulance was called due to the mother's injuries.
The mother sustained significant swelling to her eye to the point where it closed over but there were no further catastrophic injuries or loss of sight.
Solicitor Paul Johnson said the daughter had a broken arm at the time and the injuries to her mother's eye were caused by a plaster cast on her arm.
"[The assault] occurred on Christmas Day, 2018, that matter was in for a defended hearing in July, on that day a plea of guilt was entered at the 12th hour," he said.
She struck her mother in the face several times causing just what would have to be regarded as quite significant injuries.
- Magistrate David Day
Magistrate David Day said the woman had a "dangerous propensity to resorting to violence".
"She struck her mother in the face several times causing just what would have to be regarded as quite significant injuries," Mr Day said.
"She struck her in the eye region several times with her broken arm which was in a plaster cast."
However, Mr Johnson said the woman had an unhappy childhood and her father died when she was a young teenager.
"She was a victim of sustained domestic violence growing up," he said.
"She was drinking vodka, she'd never drunk vodka before, and things got out of hand."
Mr Johnson said the daughter made admissions to police when spoken to immediately after the assault which prompted Mr Day to ask why she pleaded not guilty.
Mr Johnson said since Christmas Day the daughter's behavior has significantly changed and she had not offended since then.
She hasn't had any drugs or alcohol for four months and that's something she's done by herself.
- Solicitor Paul Johnson
"There's a large element of remorse and that's resulted in a plea of guilty," he said.
"She hasn't had any drugs or alcohol for four months and that's something she's done by herself."
After Mr Day handed down the two-year jail sentence with 12-month non-parole period, the woman turned to hug her supporters and stripped off her jewellery before being led away from custodial officers.
The woman could be released on parole on September 24, 2020, and Mr Day said there was a need for a long parole period to address her criminogenic needs, particularly her resorting to violence.
"I regard this assault as being mid-range for assault occasioning," Mr Day said.
"I've seen worse but not many."
Mr Day also convicted and gave the woman a two-year community correction order with supervision and requirements she attend rehabilitation and treatment for taking part in the affray in Glenroi on November 25, 2018.
- The daughter appealed the severity of her sentence in Orange District Court on November 19, 2019, and was released from jail and given an 18-month Intensive Correction Order with 50 hours of community service.
