A banner reading "I'm unique, arborists believe I should live" was placed in the tree on the corner of Dora and William streets on Thursday, with a group of people disgruntled at council's decision believed to be behind the protest.
The tree is on the block owned by the Canobolas Family Pet Hospital.
No one from the hospital could be contacted for comment by deadline.
Councillors decided to approve a development application requesting the tree be cut down on September 17, with Canobolas Family Pet Hospital owner Lisa Brisbane at the time citing safety concerns for staff from falling limbs.
A report provided by council staff as part of the development application suggested the tree should be pruned and kept.
