Next to nothing had separated the two sides throughout the 2019 season and that showed in the decider, it looked destined to go to extra-time as the two sides went tit-for-tat and were deadlocked at 10-all for the bulk of the second half.
Then Tamatea struck, with just two minutes remaining on the clock she broke CYMS' line and crossed under the sticks, Bec Prestwidge's goal extended Hawks' lead to six and ultimately sealed the side's second straight premiership.
They remain the only under-18 league tag premiers, with 2019 just the competition's second year.
While Hawks won the minor premiership with an unblemished record CYMS actually handed them a defeat in the major semi-final, and they looked a chance to repeat that after drawing first blood on Sunday.
The green and golds opened the scoring through Elise Collins in the 15th minute and Ella Barrett nailed the conversion to extend their lead to six.
Hawks hit back through Josie Clarke but Prestwidge's kicked sailed wide and after her side held that 6-4 at the half-time break Barrett scored an opportunistic try not long after the restart to push CYMS further in front.
She grubbered behind the line and won the race to her own kick, and while her shot was waved away her four-pointer gave CYMS a converted try lead at 10-4.
But Hawks refused to go away.
Jes Pearson dived over not long after and Prestwidge made no mistake with the kick, drawing level at 10-all with 20 minutes left on the clock.
That's where the scoreline stayed as both sides went hell-for-leather in search of go-ahead points, which Tamatea ultimately provided for Hawks with two minutes remaining, she scooped up a spilled bomb to score under the posts.
"I was definitely thinking that it was going to take a mistake or big individual effort either way to decide the game, fortunately for us and unfortunately for CYMS it went our way, but it was a really good game and CYMS played really, really well," Hawks coach Steve Pearson said.
"I'm normally pretty quiet on the sidelined but I was having a good old cheer up on the seats [on Sunday], it was really great to see the way the girls hung in there. We made it tough for ourselves at times and the girls could've just folded, but they stuck to it.
"The whole game was pretty nervy and it was a relief when we scored that try, it's exciting to win another one and I'll say I'm glad we don't have to play CYMS again. We knew they'd be tough and they were, and they were improving every game."
Pearson highlighted a few of his sides stars including Jes Pearson and Bec and Caitlin Prestwidge, but reserved special praise for Lilly Baker.
"Lilly's enthusiasm is infectious and she was the best on the field I think, she really ran with purpose and was outstanding," he said.
