The upgraded 1.3 kilometre stretch of Mitchell Highway at Garveys Lane is designed to improve flow and safety of the area, with the road between Bathurst and Orange subject to 116 crashes in the five years to June 2017, resulting in seven lives lost and about 100 people hurt.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the project was part of a $12 million package to complete upgrades between Bathurst and Orange.

"The NSW Government are committed to improving safety across regional NSW," Mr Toole said.

"A 1.3 kilometre section of the Mitchell Highway ... has been widened in both directions along with an upgrade to the Garveys Lane intersection to provide room to pass safely around motorists turning off the highway.

"Further safety improvements included installing centre and side barriers to reduce the risk and severity of head-on and off-road crashes.

"Work on the Garveys Lane project started in April 2019 and is to be completed at the end of this week."

Mr Toole said the Garveys Lane project is an example of the safety improvements to be installed on the Mitchell Highway between Bathurst and Orange in the future.
