Nominations were for Anything Grows, Bills Beans East Orange, Bissys Cafe, Byng Street Cafe, Good Eddy, Scrumptious on Summer, The Agrestic Grocer and the most votes went to Nile Street Cafe.
The competition was run on Facebook and Instagram asking followers which cafe they believed was pet friendly.
For us, it's not just about having a shared space, it's about considering the welfare of the animals and also the consideration pet owners need to have for fellow patrons who want to enjoy their coffee.
- Orange Vet Hospital vet Dr Nickala Elin
The criteria included having a spacious area, a water bowl, somewhere pets could be tied up.
For its review Orange Vet Hospital is seeking more nominations and will visit cafes across Orange.
Any that are deemed pet friendly will receive a certificate and a mention on the hospital's pet friendly cafe website listing and on social media.
Tips for pet etiquette at cafes:
- Make sure the pet is trained to sit and stay around food
- Choose seats that are a bit out of the way
- Take a dog for a walk first so it isn't too restless
- Reading a dog's body language for when it is ready to leave
As the competition winner, Nile Street Café will feature in an Orange Vet Hospital video explaining pet etiquette at cafes.
Orange Vet Hospital vet Dr Nickala Elin said the business wanted to highlight the locations where pets were welcome.
"Pets are often a companion on trips and locals love to spend quality time with their animals so it's great to see more cafés, bars and restaurants offering an area for pets at their establishments," Dr Elin said.
"For us, it's not just about having a shared space, it's about considering the welfare of the animals and also the consideration pet owners need to have for fellow patrons who want to enjoy their coffee.
"Our video will give pet owners some dos and don'ts for introducing their pet to social spaces like cafes so the experience is a positive one for the pet, the owner and the cafe."
