About 12.50am on Saturday morning, three armed offenders forced entry to a home on Woodward Street at Orange where they demanded money and property from the occupants.
The male and female occupants were woken by a man armed with a machete and a knife demanding property.
A second man and a woman threatened the male occupant, who was then struck with the machete causing a superficial injury to his left shoulder.
Police have been told one man stayed at the doorway of the victims' bedroom as the other two offenders stole electrical items from throughout the home.
The three offenders left the premises and police were notified.
It's believed the couple's two small children were home at the time but remained asleep through the ordeal.
Officers attached to Central West Police District arrived a short time later and established a crime scene, where Orange Detectives and Bathurst Crime Scene attended and processed the scene.
One offender is described as being male of a stocky build, 175 centimetres tall with short, dark hair and about 40 years old. He was wearing a dark jacket with a hood and long dark trousers.
The two males were armed with various implements.

The second male was described as being of a thinner build, around 30 years old, tanned complexion. He was wearing a dark coloured hooded jumper and dark pants.
The third person was described as a female of thin build, brown hair, around 30 to 40 years old, approximately 170 to 175cm tall. She was wearing a dark hooded jumper and grey pants.
