The offender entered the Lords Place store at around 5.45pm and demanded cash from a member of staff.
Two people inside the store came to the aid of the woman at the counter, while the offender continued to ask for money from the till.
The offender successfully obtained an amount of cash from the pharmacy before leaving the store and exiting onto Lords Place.
CCTV last captured the man walking down an alleyway off Lords Place.
Detectives from the Central West Police District arrived a short time after the incident and reviewed the camera footage from the store and surrounding area.
Officers from Orange police station also conducted a canvas of the area, but were unsuccessful in locating the man.
He was described as wearing a black hood over a cap, denim shorts, as well as black and white sneakers during the offence.
Inspector David Harvey said the cashier wasn't physically hurt but was quite distressed over the incident.
"It is a concern that this behaviour is occurring," he said.
Officers from the Central Western Police District asked for anyone who has information on the whereabouts of this man to contact police on 6363 6399.
