Demolition equipment is on site at the former home of Prime Television on the corner of the Mitchell Highway and Lone Pine Avenue.
The site is owned by the Tony Leahey Motor Group.
Dealer principal Tim Leahey said the building was being demolished to stop it being vandalised.
Mr Leahey said they did not have any plans for the site once the building was removed.
An Orange City Council spokesman said council approved the demolition in November.
He said the building started operating as Country Television Services in about 1963-64 to film and broadcast TV programs to the region on channel CBN8.
It later became Midstate Television and eventually Prime before the last bulletin was broadcast from the site in 2010.
He said it had also been home to radio station 2GZ and became a training centre for several organisations including the Cadia mine.
