Mr Oborn, 20, is in an induced coma in a Sydney hospital.
One of his mates James Newman has started a GoFundMe page which has raised $10,912 in six days to aid Mr Oborn's recovery.
Mr Newman said he was stunned when he heard about the crash in which Mr Oborn's car left the road and hit a tree near the intersection of Forest and Aerodrome roads near Spring Hill about 12.30pm on Thursday August 8.
"I was shocked, I got a phone call from his mum about 6 [pm]," he said.
"I just want to help, just contribute and help out the family," he said.
Mr Newman said the family had set up a bank account for all the money raised for Mr Oborn.
"It is pretty much for his recovery at the Royal Prince Alfred in Sydney," he said.
Mr Newman said they had been mates for 13 years. "We both started the same course at TAFE Orange in 2015."
He said they worked together in kitchens across Orange including the Union Bank restaurant and the Ophir and Lord Anson hotels.
Lolli Redini restaurant chef and owner Simmon Hawke said Mr Oborn had been working at the restaurant for three weeks before the crash.
"He was only with us for a few weeks. He's a young fellow who had been working around Orange," she said.
Ms Hawke said staff were shocked when they heard of the crash. "It was really quite devastating for us. There are other young people working in the kitchen who were just starting to get to know him," she said.
Ms Hawke has donated to the GoFundMe page and said she hoped other people would donate to help Mr Oborn and his family in his recovery.
"He's making very slow progress," she said.
A statement on the fundraising page said Mr Oborn's future was unclear.
"As Mitchell remains in a coma we do not know what lies ahead or if he sustained any neurological damage but we do know it is going to be a long road to recovery for him," it said.
"Mitchell's friend James has created this GoFundMe page to assist Mitch in his recovery and rehabilitation.
"He will remain at RPA throughout his journey which we estimate will be months. All funds donated will go directly to Mitch to relieve any financial burden and ensure he receives the best recovery care possible."
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
