The new plant at Molong will begin operating once final approval is received from the NSW Department of Industry and Department of Health.
Fluoride will then be added to the water supply.
When the Molong to Cumnock and Yeoval pipeline and connection works in each village are completed, Cumnock and Yeoval will receive drinking water from the Molong water treatment plant. This means Cumnock and Yeoval will also receive fluoridated water.
Fluoridation is the process of adding fluoride to water to reach the recommended level for good dental health. About 96 per cent of the NSW population receives fluoridated water.
In NSW, fluoride is added to the water supply at a level of 1 milligram per litre, which is one part per million. This is in line with the National Health and Medical Research Council recommendations.
Department of Health research shows significantly higher rates of dental decay in unfluoridated areas, particularly in children.
The process of fluoridating the Molong supply began a number of years ago following a community survey and consultation.
Cabonne Council has been working closely with the Department Health and Department of Industry to construct the fluoridation plant, with the Department of Health providing grant funding to cover the cost.
