The Orange resident was airlifted to a Newcastle hospital on Thursday where he underwent surgery overnight.
The man was driving towards Orange at around 12.30pm when his car left the asphalt at Nixons Road.

Emergency services, including firefighters from the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW freed the man who was trapped in the vehicle for some time.
Central West Police District Chief Inspector Dave Harvey said it was unknown what had caused the incident, which was under investigation.
The young man was flown to John Hunter hospital via air ambulance after being taken to Orange hospital.
He had been the sole occupant of the car.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Forest Road and Aerodrome Road just south of the Orange Airport.
