Mr Sanger has proposed a clean-up day at the lake, and while he stressed it was "only at the very early stages", he wanted to bring in experts and community members to help beautify the lake.

"The gist of it is to organise people to have botanists and horticulturalists to come together with people from Orange to rally together while the lake's still low," he said.

"There are weeds out there we could pull out and obviously look to get rid of the rubbish around the place."

The former state Labor candidate is looking to discuss the move more with council, having spoken to mayor Reg Kidd and councillor Stephen Nugent at a tree-planting session at the lake on Sunday.

"It's early days, but we're looking at late September or early October - we want to make sure we've planned it and thought about it to get it right and clean it correctly," Mr Sanger said.

"Reg is onboard, we'll get onto [council workers from] Park and Recreations to not pull plants which are needed to keep the water clear and healthy."

He said the level of the lake on Sunday was as low as he'd seen in 20 years living in Orange.

"Speaking to some people who've been here since the '50s, they said it's been around this level once but not quite this low," he said.

Mr Sanger would also love to spruce up the lake with an additional playground, and would like council to consider reopening the caravan park, but said those were decisions for councillors to make.

Orange councillor and chairperson of the Parks and Recreation committee Jason Hamling said it was "fantastic" community members were looking to be involved.

Cr Hamling said discussions had been held about low water levels at not only Lake Canobolas but Suma Park and Spring Creek could be taken advantage of, and wanted to work with Mr Sanger to ensure any work done at the lake was needed.

"Recently we had some sand dumped out there on the beach just before Christmas and we had the reed cutter out there earlier but I'm all for [more work being done]," he said.

"Hopefully it coincides with a weekend I'm not doing much because I'd love to get out there and get involved, the lake's the jewel in the crown of Orange when it's full and hopefully we get some rain soon."
