Mr Hall found a commemorative patch from the landing in 1969, which he believed came with the newspaper of the day, as well as a stamp.

He was working as a fireman at the time and was awed by the technology involved in reaching the moon.

"The technology wasn't around that we have today," he said.

Mr Hall has taken a keen interest in astronomy in the time since.

"I've got a telescope and I get my grandsons watching the moon," he said.

Apollo 11 reached the moon on July 21, 1969 - the Parkes Radio Telescope celebrated with free tours, telescopes on the lawn and entertainment.
