The timber boardwalk on a steel frame would provide the missing link in the 1.5 kilometre loop around the wetlands.

Currently a mix of concrete and gravel paths and boardwalks provides a recreation area for walkers and cyclists.

Ploughmans Wetlands Care Group secretary Lindy Glover said the group was seeking $25,354 from the state government's My Community Project program to get the bridge built.

Ms Glover said the missing link on the Cargo Road end of the wetlands was difficult to cross in wet weather.

"During wet weather the dam will go across the spillway making it totally impassable," she said.

Ms Glover said Orange City Council had provided the existing walkways.

"This has been council's project but they can only go so far. As a committee we have to take up the mantle," she said.

"We will provide the ongoing betterment of the area."

She said the pathways were used by walkers, people looking at bird life in the area and families on bicycles.

"We [also] get a lot of mums with prams down here for the walk," she said.

Ms Glover said once they were able to secure the funding the work on the bridge could start.

Under the My Community Project guidelines the work must be completed within 12 months of the funding being allocated.

The Ploughmans Wetlands Care Group is one of 41 projects in the Orange state electorate to have applied for a share of $260,000 under the scheme.

About 19 of the projects are in the Orange City Council area and include upgrades for council and school sporting fields, providing shelters for players and spectators at Sir Jack Brabham Park and widening of the track around Gosling Creek Reserve for cycling and other activities.

A public vote to help determine where the funds will be spent is open until August 15.
