Numbers of those interested in tennis are surging in Orange these school holidays, despite winter not being the ideal time to run around on the court, with most preferring football or either rugby codes.

However, Gersbach Tennis coach and founder Alison Seib said the numbers at their holiday sessions had more than 75 participants this week, up from an average of 40 or 50 in winter sessions over the past few years.

She also said the gender split had become more pronounced this year, with "more girls than usual" signing up.

Mrs Seib said there was one key reason for that - the Barty effect.

"There was a definite buzz with plenty of people talking about [Wimbledon] because Ash is number one," she said.

"Normally kids don't pay attention to it but obviously because adults are talking about it they're hearing it."

The boost to numbers looks likely to continue, with seasonal growth - Gersback Tennis, which Mrs Seib runs with brother Darren, normally averages 100 in summer sessions - likely to capitalise on Ash Barty's continued success.

"For sure it will continue, she'll be up there [in that top ranking] for a little while ... we had a few inquiries about weekly lessons. They'll stick around for sure," Mrs Seib said.
