The weather forecast for Orange on both days is for a top of just 6 degrees, with snow predicted to fall in the early hours of Saturday.
Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said at this stage the forecast was not for snowfall on the city but "it's going to get close."
Snow was predicted to fall at about 1000 metres around 9am, before clearing off, with the chance of another dusting in the afternoon.
Residents can expect to sleep through most of the weekends rainfall, with a few showers predicted between 1-4am on Saturday morning.
Ms Westcott said to expect a few centimetres on the mountain which equates to "enough for a small snowman."
The prediction was for snow south of Orange, with Cowra and Canberra both due for a dusting.
Ms Westcott advised anyone travelling to the snow regions for the school holidays to lookout for weather warnings.
She said high winds could pose a risk to people on the roads and cold temperatures could make it unpleasant.
"Out of town people heading to Orange should bring an extra jumper," Ms Westcott said.
